Spur Corporation Eco-Team joined forces with the City of Cape Town and Rietvlei Wetland, Table View on Saturday 23 April 2016 to celebrate Earth Day with a beach clean-up at Milnerton Lagoon Beach.
Enthusiastic members of Spur’s Eco Team as well as representatives from City of Cape Town Disaster Management and Rietvlei Wetland Reserve, Department of Sanitation employees and members of the public took on the task after considerable networking and assistance from Tyger Burger newspaper in advertising the event. Heavy rains the previous day guaranteed the washing of waste along the Salt River and into the lagoon via Table Bay and Milnerton Beach.
The day itself began well with clear skies, still air and plenty of eager hands keen to show support for the plight of our natural environment. True to form, the heavy rains had delivered masses of waste, mostly plastic, via the river and ocean. With 2 hours earmarked for the operation, the team had their work cut out. Fortunately, after much encouragement, smiles, laughter and perspiration, the designated lagoon beach area was returned to a considerably more natural state.
Participants were not sent away empty-handed however, as Spur Steak Ranches generously gave away 10 R250 Meal Vouchers to winners of the post clean-up lucky draw. This ensured that not only were the seagulls and sea life left smiling, but all the helpers too.
